The Darwen Library Players started life as a local church dramatic group. At this time each church
in the area had it's own dramatic or operatic group, some being quite large, and the Bolton Road
Congregational Church was one of these. Over the years the group evolved and eventually moved
to doing performances in the Library Theatre, which is situated below the Darwen Library, a building
built with funds provided Andrew Carnegie, whose libraries can be found all over the world.
With the move to the library came the name change and the d.l.p. have been giving productions
to the people of Darwen regularly for over 50 years. Although the title library theatre sounds
impressive the fact was that the theatre was little more than a large room with a stage, and it was
decided by the council who managed the building to turn it into a proper theatre. The original plans
and time scale for completion of the proposals unfortunately over ran by many years due to one thing
and another, which meant that d.l.p. were without anywhere to perform during this time. It was an
extremely frustrating time for the members but eventually we ended up with one of the best small
theatres in the North of England
